San Diego Comic-Con is officially underway and we are getting news already. Today in conjunction with a panel, Paramount Pictures released the first official trailer for the upcoming movie, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (found below). I thought that I would share my thoughts on the trailer.
Full disclosure before I get into my thoughts. I am an avid Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) fan and player. I am the dungeon master for a campaign that meets twice a month. That being said, I really like this trailer. This trailer has the cheek and fun that I like my D&D content to have. The characters and banter give me the same vibe as popular online campaigns like Critical Role, Not Another D&D Podcast, and Dimension 20.
I like the idea of a D&D movie franchise that carves out a space of fantasy comedy. The characters in the trailer all feel like they are having fun and I want to go on that journey with them. This movie is like Good Omens and Guardians of the Galaxy made a high fantasy baby. I can already tell that my favorite character is going to be Sophia Lillis’ Tiefling character, who appears to be a druid based on her ability to shape-shift. (Side-note, if the MCU wants younger X-Men, she would be a great Jean Grey). ((Side-side-note, I love when Chris Pine is allowed to ham it up)).
In the trailer already I see many popular D&D monsters like the mimic, owlbear, and gelatinous cube; I can see many players having a great time in the theater identifying different monsters and creatures, much like Pokémon fans did with the Detective Pikachu movie.
I think my biggest worry with this film is that there will be some D&D fans that will be upset with the sillier tone and try to take down the movie online. But overall, this looks like a lot of fun!
