Today at DC’s film panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, we got our first official trailer for Shazam! Fury of the Gods a sequel to the 2019 DC film, Shazam. I really enjoyed the first film as a superhero movie calling back to ’80s films like Gremlins and Big. The original movie had humor and darkness to it.
This movie seems to throw us right back into the tone of the first film with Zachary Levi monologuing about feeling pointless in a world with so many heroes. The trailer shows us some fun action, cool visuals, and a great look at our villains, Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu as “daughters of Atlas”. We also get a shot of Rachel Zegler. I think with this trailer, it looks like Shazam is going to carve out a space as the family-comedy films within the DCEU, similar to the Ant-Man movies.
Of the upcoming DC films, I think I am most excited for this one currently. No release date was added to the trailer, but the movie is currently set to premiere in theaters on December 21st, 2022.
