MCU: Marvel Studios SDCC 2022 “Mega Panel” News Roundup

by Miller C. Lashbrook

Saturday night Kevin Feige took to the stage at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 and gave fans quite the presentation. He revealed the future of the next three years of the MCU, some of which were dates for previously announced projects, but some were brand new announcements. In this post, I will break down all of the announcements.

Kevin Feige announced right away that Phase 4 of the MCU was pretty much over, that She-Hulk, coming August 17th, 2022, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, coming November 11th, 2022, would be the last two big projects for Phase 4. Now, this was interesting since there have been rumors for a while regarding a Werewolf by Night Halloween Special for this year, and we had previously been told there would be a Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special this year as well; neither of those projects was mentioned at the panel. The two trailers released during the panel were released online and if you would like to hear my reactions to those, you can find them on Pop Culture Fae:

The Multiverse Saga – Phases 4-6

Kevin Feige brought exactly what many fans have been asking for, structure. He shared with fans a roadmap to follow for the next few years. He revealed that Phases 4-6 will be dubbed the Multiverse Saga.

Phase 5 – February 2023 – July 2024

Phase 5 will begin in February 2023 and run until July 2024 with the release of 6 movies and 6 Disney+ shows, making for 12 projects across a year and a half.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – February 17, 2023

Just before the panel began, an official Comic-Con poster was released for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (pictured above). This poster contains two big reveals. We get a good look at Kang in his Conqueror costume. We also get to see Cassie Lang in her superhero outfit as Stature or Stinger. Her costume looks to be using the Stinger color palette from the comics but taking the look from Scott’s MCU Ant-Man suit. Hope’s Wasp costume also has a new color palette, looking a lot like Janet Van Dyne’s Wasp suit from the comics.

At the comic con panel we also got some news regarding this film and fans there were shown exclusive footage. We learned that M.O.D.O.K. will make his MCU debut in this film. Bill Murray will also be appearing in the film as a character that Janet has a history with. Apparently, Scott Lang is writing a memoir at the start of the film. I think this movie will be a great start to Phase 5 and throw the audience into the deep end of time travel and the multiverse with Kang as a looming presence.

Secret Invasion – Spring 2023

We finally have a window of release for this show that we have known about since Marvel’s panel at 2019 Comic-Con. The cast of Secret Invasion has slowly expanded over the past couple of years, but we still do not know much about the plot. At the panel, Colbie Smoulders appeared to talk about Maria Hill’s presence in the show. She described the show as a thriller. Footage was shown to the audience and it revealed that Don Cheadle will be reprising his role as James Rhodes/War Machine in the series. With this show now set to release before The Marvels, it makes me wonder if the show will lead into that film.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – May 5, 2023

I am so excited for this movie! I really enjoy the first two Guardians films. At the panel they dedicated a huge amount of time to talking up this movie as the end of an era. Director James Gunn talked about how this movie will be the end of this Guardians team. They revealed that the High Evolutionary will be a part of the film, played by Chukwudi Iwuji. Maria Bakalova was also announced to be playing Cosmo the Spacedog. The way the movie was discussed at the panel made it seem like this will be a more serious than the previous films. Footage from this movie was shown to the audience at Comic-Con and the look at Baby Rocket Racoon broke the internet.

Echo – Summer 2023

Echo, which is in production currently, was announced to release in Summer 2023. It was also announced that Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio will be reprising their roles of Daredevil/Matt Murdock and Kingpin/Wilson Fisk respectively.

Loki Season 2 – Summer 2023

Loki Season 2 is filming right now and was given an official release window at the Comic-Con panel, in Summer 2023. This will be 2 years after the release of the first season, but thanks to this show taking place in its own side of the MCU timeline, it could probably pick up right where the first season left off. With Kang set to appear in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, it will be interesting to see how or if these stories connect.

The Marvels – July 28, 2023

This was one of the projects that nothing was really discussed. This date had already been shared. The movie is in production currently. After the finale of Ms. Marvel, I am quite excited to see this movie.

Ironheart – Fall 2023

Ironheart was given a release window of Fall 2023. We get a good look at Dominique Thorne in the titular role in the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever teaser.

Blade – November 3, 2023
Credit: Marvel Studios

The announcement of Blade was the mic drop of Marvel’s 2019 Comic-Con panel, but we were not given a date. We now have an official date. This date is interesting since it is a horror film the week after Halloween. We can also assumed that this will probably be the next appearance of Dane Whitman/Black Knight, based on the post-credits scene of Eternals.

Agatha: Coven of Chaos – Winter 2023/2024
Credit: Marvel Studios

This show was previously titled, Agatha: House of Harkness. Many fans think that this change in title could hint at Wanda being in the show since she uses chaos magic. The Coven part of the title definitely hints at the presence of many witches. I am happy that we now have a window for this project that I am so excited to see.

Daredevil: Born Again – Spring 2024
Credit: Marvel Studios

Daredevil is back and he is getting 18 episodes of a new show! I am so excited to have Charlie Cox in the proper MCU playing Daredevil.

Captain America: New World Order – May 3, 2024
Credit: Marvel Studios

Captain America 4 now has an official title, the same title as the first episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier. If this movie is just an extension of the show, I will be so happy. Letting this movie kick off the summer also shows that Marvel has a lot of faith in this project.

Thunderbolts – July 26, 2024
Credit: Marvel Studios

Thunderbolts is set to release in July 2024 and finish out Phase 5. The groundwork for this movie is being laid already in Phase 4, but Kevin Feige said at the panel that he cannot reveal the team, because some members have not appeared in the MCU yet.

Phase 6 – Fall 2024 – Fall 2025

TWO AVENGERS FILMS IN ONE YEAR! Phase 6 was left with a lot of empty slots that Kevin Feige will fill in at D23 in September. Phase 6 is set to begin with Fantastic Four, on November 8, 2024. But the real highlight of the Phase 6 reveal is the fact that fans are going to be getting Avengers: The Kang Dynasty on May 2, 2025, and Avengers: Secret Wars on November 7, 2025.

This panel mostly revealed release dates and logos. I am hoping that at D23 we get more story and character details about some of the Phase 5 projects, in addition to filling in the Phase 6 slate.
